An update to the original Challenger 600, the Challenger 601-3A first flew in 1987. The updated Challenger has improved turbofan engines, as well as a new EFIS glass flight deck. The aircraft features a low/swept wing with recognizable winglets, and dual, rear fuselage mounted turbofan engines. Each side of the fuselage has six cabin windows. The 601-3A has a swept T-tail with swept horizontal stabilizer and generally seats 10 passengers plus a two-man crew. It has a cruise speed of 460 knots and a range of 3365 nautical miles.

The Challenger 601-3A, priced for the discerning owner, has the same cabin space as the Challenger 601-3A/ER, with seating room for up to nine passengers. The Challenger 601-3A is a dynamic and unique aircraft with luxurious accommodations, large forward galley and generous lavatory with full amenities. Like its sister-ships, the 601-3A is an international performer with a range of 3,620 nautical miles, also flying up to 41,000 feet and maintaining a high-speed cruise of 528 mph. Amenities aboard this aircraft are the same as those found aboard the Challenger 604 and Challenger 601-3A/ER.
