The Gulfstream IV is vastly improved, larger, longer ranging and advanced development of the earlier II and III with significant improvement with the G-IV over the earlier Gulfstream models are the Rolls-Royce Tay turbofans, which bring significant fuel burn and noise emission improvements despite their higher thrust output than the II and III's Speys (the IV continues a Gulfstream and Rolls-Royce association that dates back to the original Dart powered Gulfstream I). Other changes include a stretched fuselage and aerodynamically and structurally improved wing with 30% fewer parts, greater fuel capacity and range, increased span tailplane and an advanced EFIS avionics suite with six color CRT displays.
The GIV is one of the world’s best-selling, large-cabin business jet aircraft. It boasts an impressive record for technical performance, comfort, safety and reliability. To date, the GIV/GIV-SP fleet has accounted for more than two million hours of flight time with a very impressive dispatch reliability rate of over 99.8 percent. The GIV and GIV-SP hold over 70 Gulfstream’s History world and national records. On December 3, 2002, Gulfstream rolled out its 500th GIV aircraft officially ending the GIV-series.
Two Rolls-Royce Mk 611-8 engines provide 13,850 lbs of thrust each. Inspection interval is 8,000 hours. The Roll-Royce upgraded engine is responsible for 15% improved fuel consumption and decreased noise levels. Another addition is the six-screen, color EFIS. The Honeywell SPZ-8000 avionics suite is found in the GIV’s cockpit. It includes Collins radios, FMS and dual Honeywell laser inertial reference systems. Triple laser INS, dual FMS and an air-to-ground telephone are options.
The GIV is the first in the Gulfstream to employ Goodyear Aerospace’s brake-by-wire system and a Dowty fail-passive steer-by-wire system, making pilot maneuverability easier. The GIV’s takeoff weight is 2,000 additional pounds than its predecessor, at 72,300 pounds. Hot-and-high performance is also improved. The GIV has a high speed cruise of 480 ktas.
The GIV replaced the GIII making the GIV cabin the largest in its class. The GIV will typically hold up to 13 executives or luxury leisure passengers in total comfort. The GIV can depart from private runways as small as 4,000 feet, allowing access to the most exclusive luxury flight destinations. The GIV can carry passengers from New York to London, Los Angeles to Maui or Maine to Miami without a fuel stop. The maximum speed of 527 mph and short-range flight ability make the Gulfstream GIV an ideal option for the most discerning private jet clients.
